MAN UP n' Cook 2016
Kicks-Off Father's Day with Food, Fun and Fellowship
Third Annual cook off to benefit Orlando youth and their families
ORLANDO — MAN UP n’ Cook, Orlando’s Third Annual Father’s Day Cook-Off Competition—June 11 from 1p.m to 5p.m. at the Central Florida Fairgrounds, showcases Orlando’s best backyard grill masters working alongside their mentees in the spirit of teamwork where food is the feature and servanthood is the focus.
Mouthwatering dishes will be served at MAN UP n’ Cook, Central Florida’s leading youth centric festival, complemented by music, entertainment and family-friendly activities such as the Prodigy Youth Cultural Arts Corner, youth performances and much more.
New this year, we are kicking off the event with a flag ceremony by the Central Florida Council Boy Scouts, in addition to adding a teen chef to the line-up, a Youth Art & Poetry Slam, a comedy segment and an Intergenerational Sports Challenge in partnership with the City of Orlando Families, Parks & Recreations Department, where adults will connect with youth through sports.
“Similar to food, sports has the innate ability to connect people and change the world. It has an almost unmatched role to play in promoting understanding, healing wounds and breaking down barriers. When young people participate in sports, they can build up their health and self-esteem, use their talents to the fullest, learn the ideals of teamwork and tolerance, and be drawn away from the dangers of drugs and crime. We must use the power of sport as an agent of social change,” Kofi Annan. Team City Kickin’ Cruiser will help support our efforts.
Success Row will raise awareness about various educational and recruitment opportunities. Vendors slated to attend include Bethune-Cookman University, Valencia College, Mid Florida Tech, Nova Southeastern University, Orlando Job Corp Center, the United Negro College Fund, the Marines and other military branches. According to Frederick Douglass, “It is easier to empower youth; than to repair broken men.”
A wealth of resources and advisors will be on hand for parents, ranging from information about youth programs, registering for library cards provided by Orange County Public Library System, financial literacy, health care options provided by Primary Care Access Network, nutrition provided by Hebni Nutrition Consultants, Inc. as well as grief counseling for families provided by New Hope for Kids and much more.
“To be impactful it is necessary to wrap the entire household in resources and make the parental figure(s) aware of available opportunities too,” explains Chris Wallace, Founder of MAN UP Mentoring, Inc.
Walmart has committed a team of 12 store managers and personnel to volunteer, in addition to other supporting organizations such as Volunteer UCF, SISTHUS Inc. and Progressive Black Men.
