Washington Shores area is comprised of available private and institutional land. The area has a diverse composition of residents, ranging from retirees to single-parent households. The garden is in proximity to Washington Shores Elementary, as well as, several churches in the neighborhood; lending to an abundance of educational and volunteering opportunities.
According to Orange County Public Schools, 92% of students attending Washington Shores Elementary would be considered impoverished. For this reason, we are committed to donating at least 90% of our harvest each season to local families.
The garden provides an opportunity to build community capacity. There are many benifits to establishing a community garden in a neighborhood:
Raising up a generation of servant leaders
Exposing our youth to career opportunities in a agriculture and landscaping
Teaching life skills
An opportunity for the intergenerational and cross-cultural connection
